Sagarmatha National Park

Sagarmatha National Park is located in the Eastern Nepal, which covers some parts of the Himalayas and the southern half of Mount Everest. The park was established on July 19, 1976 and it was inscribed as Natural World Heritage Site. “Mother of the universe” is the Sanskrit meaning for the name Sagarmatha and is the modern Nepali name for Mount Everest.


The park has the area of 1,148 km² and is located at an altitude of 2,845 m. Only 3% of the park is occupied with the forest, where as 28% is grazing land and 69% land comprises barren areas. It contains upper watershed of the Dudh Koshi river basin system. The forests provide habitat to at least 118 species of birds, including Danphe, Blood pheasant, Red-billed chough, and yellow-billed chough. Sagarmatha National Park is also home to a number of rare species, including snow leopard and panda.
